“How you doing over there, champ?” I questioned Reygan, chuckling lightly at her flipping me off.

“Leave me alone. I hate you.”

“Oooooh, hate is such a strong word, don’t you think? I thought we were getting to a point where maybe you liked me a little bit.”

“Well, you thought,” she paused, letting out a soft whimper, squeezing her eyes shut tightly.

“Wrong.” Amused by her antics, I just shook my head, falling quiet again as the sound of the purring tattoo needle sounded out throughout the small tattoo parlor that I’d gotten nearly all of my ink from.

When we first walked in the shop, Reygan talked big shit per usual, acting like she was a boss. She was even bold enough to get the biggest tattoo you could get in one session..

Now, she was over there crying and pouting while I was taking my shit like a G. “Talk to me and distract me,” she said through gritted teeth.

“About what?” I questioned coolly, slightly wincing as the tattoo needle moved across my skin.

“Something, anything. Just distract me, please,” she said, before gasping slightly. A little part of me hated that she was in pain, so I did as she asked.

“Where did you learn how to speak French?”

“My mom. She’s originally from France, but she came here to go to college, met my father, and it was all she wrote. What about you?”

“My dad. Both of your parents went to college?”

“Yes. My father has a Master’s degree in Aerospace engineering, and my mom had a Master’s degree in Culinary Arts with a specialization in French cuisine.”

“How yo’ mama go to college for cooking and you can’t boil water?” I joked, thankful that she wasn’t in a position to be able to swing at me.

She hated that I always clowned her for not being able to cook.

“Fuck you.”

“Watch your mouth, lil’ girl. And you ain’t ready for all that.”

“Boy, bye.”

“Anyway, so yo’ mama is white?”

“No, jackass.” I could almost hear her frowning. “She’s black.”

“You said she was from France.

“There are black people in France, Aasim.”

“Well shit, I ain’t ever been, so I wouldn’t know. Every French person I’d ever come across was white.”

“We gonna have to expand your horizons.” Reygan giggled lightly, and I scoffed, ignoring her. “Tell me about your parents,” she urged.

“Ummmmm,” I dragged out. “There’s not much to tell. My pops was kind of harsh but always fair at the same time, and he believed that nothing came before family. That’s something that he instilled in me, which is why I’m so protective of the little bit of family I have left. My moms, that was my baby right there. She had the biggest heart of anybody I know.” I paused, smiling for a second. “Well, I take that back. You might be neck and neck with her.”

Reygan didn’t say anything, but I was sure that she had a goofy ass smile on her face. “Is your aunt your mom or your dad’s sister?”

“My dad,” I answered, grimacing at the temporary pain shooting through my shoulder.
